Though there is never ONE standard in media, there is for the most part one major technology that leads others usually by "value".
A few common medias of past and present. (I'm sure there were more before my time.)
VHS.. gave way to DVD.. giving way to Hi Def DVDs
5.25" floppy disks.. gave way to 3.5" disks.. gave way to CD-ROMs.. gave way to DVD-ROMs
There is a problem with having the 2 incompatible standards. Paramount and Universal Studios now only produce their next gen DVDs in HD-DVD format. Sony and 20th Century Fox only produce their next gen DVDs in Blu Ray. Warner produces in both formats. You can't buy "Cars" and "Transformers" for the kiddies in the same format unless it's
standard ol DVD.
