How old is he? Both of my sons found a Chipmunk rifle under the tree on their 6th Christmas. Both started shooting them and my Single Six shortly thereafter.
His mom may not be ready for that, and I certainly understand where it could be a source of friction. My wife never had any trouble with it, as it was a great way to spend time with them doing something we all like. That carries on to today; she allows us our Porsche addiction.
