Oh hell ya you did the right thing leaving it alone. All they'll do is disregard it and resent you.
However, ever notice these people, when their kids hit the teen years, these parents whine and cry about the resultant behavior and how they "simply don't understand why they are acting this way..."....poor, poor parents...
