OH WHAT NOW?!? Bad idle and white smoke!
Well, it looks like my Volvo and Porsche are trading places...
Dropped my Volvo off for a tranny swap this morning. Should be ready either tomorrow or Monday.
Not an hour later, on the way to work, at a stoplight, I notice that the idle is a little rough. I think, hmm that's weird. I put the car in gear and take off, and it stumbles a bit, there is a whisp of white smoke from under the hood, and a poof of white smoke from the exhaust. F@ck! Definitely burning coolant.
My first thought is, "blown head gasket," but the car runs smooth as silk while in gear and driving. Hmm, weird. I stop at another light. Idle is fine for a few secs, but starts to get a little worse. Sure enough, when I put the car in gear it stumbles a bit, there is a whisp of white smoke from under the hood, and a poof of white smoke from the exhaust.
I'm stumped. I get to work, check the oil. No collant. I check the coolant. No oil. I fire up the car after a few mins., and there is a TON of white smoke from under the hood, apparently burning off the exhaust or bottom end of the engine.
I decide to take a half day to get this sorted out. After work I go out and start the car. It starts fine, runs fine until it is warmed up (that is, until coolant starts pumping?). I manage to miss most of the lights home, car runs great. Stop at a light after driving about 6 or 7 miles, sure enough the idle is a little rough. I put the car in gear and take off, and it stumbles a bit, there is a whisp of white smoke from under the hood, and a poof of white smoke from the exhaust.
I don't think it's a head gasket. If it was, the car would stumble on accelleration, non? There was no milkshake. And that wouldn't explain the smoke from under the hood. My guess is that coolant is leaking from somewhere and somehow mixing with gas, pooling up at idle.
I am gonna climb under the car and see what I can see, pull the spark plugs, check the airbox, etc. Anything off the top of your head it might be?
