What you can do is put the little plastic spacers between the speaker and the grille, instead of between the speaker and the door. That will hopefully keep the tweeter from hitting the grille. If not, you can go to a hardware store and get some taller spacers. I'm not sure about the early cars, but if you've got a late car, there's about 1/4" of room before the grille will hit the dash, so you should be ok.
