Pick up an upgraded gently used Dell 1501 for around 450-550. Upgraded properly, these units were about a grand. A very solid little unit.

I'd rather have a year old $1,000 notebook than a new bottom of the line $500 one.

If used doesn't float your boat, I have had good luck with the dell outlet store. While refurbished, their first quality returned units look and function as new.
