I think I started the thread because it seems like for the most part the past few races I've TiVo'd, the Mazda MX-5 series and the Porsche Super Cup race recaps, were full of bumper cars. The last few rounds of the Porsche Super Cup were especially aggressive I thought. As Flash pointed out, both are spec series. It pains me to think of the amount of money that gets spent after EACH race putting the cars back together. Everyone from the drivers to the pit crew to the team bosses just accepts that as part of the program, part of racing. Maybe it's Christmas or something, and I don't mean to be righteous, but it seems indulgent. Yikes, I'm normally not like this - maybe it's my lack of sleep caused by my 2 1/2 year old.
As Jester said, even for doing just DEs, I'm basically prepared to financially and mentally walk away from my car. If I wasn't, then I don't think I'd participate. I realize that $hit happens, sometimes it's your fault, sometimes not. That's actually one of the reasons I am hesitant to really upgrade my car cosmetically - I don't want to make it so nice that I become afraid to drive it.
I'm just a lowly DE guy for now, and probably forever, and that's fine w/me - at least until my factory Porsche sponsorship kicks in!
