I was on my way to Blackhawk for Octoberfest on highway 90 outside of Chicago. I was pretty far out in the sticks, the sun had not fully come up and I was doing something over the 65mph limit. I thought I was in good shape as there was a SUV about 1/2 mile ahead that was consistently pulling away from.
I crest a hill and who is sitting in the median but a ILHP squad car. He immediately lit 'em up and pulled in behind me. I pulled over, and got my documents ready. Now, I had my numbers on the side of the car, tools in the back, cooler, helmet and everything else I need for a DE at Blackhawk. The patrolman took a look my stuff and asked, "Going to Blackhawk?". "Yes Sir" I replied.
He came back and stunned me as he wrote me a WARNING ticket with an indicated speed of 74pmh (in a 64). As he gave me the warning slip he sternly said "Keep the speed on the track". " Ok", I said. Then I asked what he clocked me at since I'm sure my 23 year old speedo was off. "If I told you, I'd have to give you a real ticket", he said. Fair 'nough to me.
"Hey, Why didn't you tag that SUV that was clearly going faster than me?" I asked before he walked away. "You were the first one I came across, that's all."
Luck of the draw. At least it was only a warning.
