The reason for the cams and springs at 41k was because the car started using oil, valve guides, and I elected to repair them. While in the process we also replaced the head studs, rod end bolts and clutch. The total cost was 10k. The rings showed no wear. The replacement of the valve guides and the other repairs were not urgent but I like things to be wright. It was a good time to add the cams and the stiffer valve springs were more of an insurance policy. With the motor apart the rod end bolts and head studs are two possible weak points and I considered them preventive measures. The same thing with the clutch.
About a month ago just before a major service I had my mechanic replace the chain tensioner because we thought one was making some noise. Again I was just being overly cautious. I use the car for work and also week end trips and I do not want any problems when I am on the road.
In both of the above cases the repairs I made were probably not necessary, just as changing the oil every 3500 miles is over kill. It is just my way of taking care of the car and assuring a trouble free ownership and being able to pass on a good car to the next owner.
