My dad came to this country (legally, by the way) in the early 1900's and could not speak English. But he worked hard and eventually could even read and write a little and he figured most stuff out.

There was something he would sometimes say to us kids that could be relevant today:

'There are three types of people that you should never fully trust...a lawyer, a preacher, and a politician. And if you see a lawyer or a politician carrying a bible run like hell in the opposite direction."

Hmmm...............
