I've been using it for a few years without issue, every once in awhile it needs to be updated and the wording makes it sound like you need to buy it but no, just upgrade it for the free version.
As for the crap getting past, are you sure it wasn't there before you installed AVG and it is now being found?
Turn off system restore (all restore points will be lost but virus's hide there and this is the only way to get them), restart in safe mode and run the full system scan (deleteing anything found) then reboot to normal and turn system restore back on.
