If it is an aluminum or copper washer type gasket(I haven't replaced mine yet, so I don't know), then you shouldn't need any sealant. These types of seals are designed to crush to match the sealing surfaces. They should be replaced every time the part is removed and reinstalled.
If it is a gasket material type seal, a light coating of fuel and oil resistant sealant(RTV black or equivalent) on each side of the gasket will work just fine. Too much sealant will just squish out and make a mess, or end up in your oil.
