Now that he has clarified his earlier post, I think he needs to get Dad to give him the 525 and let him maintain. Hell, my 92 525 wagon has 237K on the clock and going strong. Insurance/tags are cheap. For far less than what a new car depreciates, you can maintain that 525 over the next 2-3 years.
Tell dad you will take over all maintenance on it until you graduate and sell it when you're done with college and split whatever you get for it with dad. That seems to be win/win for all concerned.
