But then the issues start dancing in my head: no warranty, 6 year old car vs. 2-3 year old car, more expensive parts/maintenance, higher insurance rates, worse fuel economy

Don't do it! I've been down that road, and always ended up regretting it. You have enough stuff to f- with already. Unless you have a spare few thousand set back for the inevitable repairs/maintenance.
