I'm totally serious when I say:
The secret to a long lasting relationship is Reduced Expectations.
My sweetheart of 20 years never says to me:
"You remember when you used to bring me flowers?" (I never did.)
"You forgot my anniversary." (She tells me ahead of time 'cause she doesn't expect me to remember.)
Before her birthday comes up we have a conversion that goes something like this:
Her: "My birthday is coming up next week"
Me: "Does your boyfriend usually get you something for your birthday?"
Her: "Yes"
Me: "Any idea what he getting you this year?"
Then she tells me what she'd like.
If she tells me "Valentine's Day is coming up." I say "What are you getting me?"
Of course there several factors that help a relationship but Reduced Expectation is a big one that no one seems to mention.
