one bit of advice i got early on, was one that took me a while to figure out.
"learn how to play drums like a black man plays drums and everything else after that will become easy."
hadnt a clue what it meant when first spoken. and when i asked what it meant, i was told to look at a new orleans jazz bands drummer. so i did. and still hadnt a clue and focused on their beat. i got hooked on that and steel drums early on. steel drums dont get any more basic.
when i finally figured it out it was like a light bulb had gone off.
wondering what the answer is? scratching yer head?
well think about it for a moment................9/10 black jazz drummers 50 years ago hadnt 2 nickels to rub together. their kits were comprised SOLELY of a snare, a hi-hat, and a kick bass. cymbals were a luxury, and any other drum mounted on the bass or on the floor was a very slow evolution.
so since they only had a hi-hat and a snare and the bass beat with their foot, they became damn proficient at making many different sounds come from what little they had.
so your basics are the root of all and everything else is just what is added. which has obviously spawned mega keith moon/pert/bonham size drum sets.
if you go back and watch older drummers you will see what im saying. little but the basics but an incredible array of sound coming from so little.
