I just had a similar issue with my original 3LDZ on my 76, but without the "swivel option". Mine used to smoke at startup and run fine afterwards. Every once in a while it would blow a little smoke in 4th gear full boost going uphill. Then one day on the same hill I started blowing major smoke, and boost levels dropped when should have been at full boost. The turbo seals went out. I was planning on upgrading my turbo anyway, so I replaced it. I had a little shaft play in the turbo but not much, nothing rubbing, etc. But when spinning as fast as that does, it doesn't take much. I had about a 1/2 cup of oil that poured out of the outlet housing when I removed it, so I know it was the seals.
