My 1999 996 just died with 94,386 miles on it.
After much deliberation (5 minutes), I order a brand new motor from Porsche. There is a way to make the newer motor fit the older 996 but the wire harness and computer need to be re-worked. I decided against it.
Sad day for me...and my wallet.
