The basic process is to "jailbreak" your iPhone so that it can accept third party apps, then to install "installer.app" - Installer.app allows one to install many different apps, wallpapers, icons and such.
I haven't jailbroken my phone since the 1.1.1 days, but if you Google "installer.app" you will be able to find the solution. If you are 1.1.3 now, I think you have to back-date your phone to earlier firmware and the process is a bit involved.
Also search tuaw.com - there are some iPhone app developers who blog there.
