Have you thought about China? That is the current land of opportunity. If you know any Mandarin (or can learn fast), your English and Japanese would make you a rather useful commodity.
If my ex and kid were in Japan, not sure I'd make a move to the states. That would pretty much end any chance of being involved. China at least is a reasonable plane trip away.
You need to make crazy money to be comfortable in SoCal. Teaching ain't gonna cut it imho. Unless you want to live in a less-than-desirable area. Which can be ok...some places are regentrifying. But it will be a bit of a shock relative to Sapporo.
