It's not so much the mileage, but how was and who did the maintainance? Did it sit around a long time? Does it have full (and I mean FULL) service history? If modified, do all the stock parts come with it?
The 748/996/998 range are slightly less diy-able than the 900 air cooled models, but depending on your annual mileage, you could only be going to the dealer for valve adjustment.
Since buying mine, the second Ducati I've had (the first was a bevel-drive one), the only dealer maintenance was valve adjust/timing belt change.
