In general it IS in the financial best interest of the company to behave in a way the is acceptable to the public. We can identify exceptions, these only serve to prove the rule.

The profit motive is an amazingly effective motivator AND regulator.

I was in my teens when I had one of those epiphany moments of sudden clarity; I understood that everyone working in their own self interest benefits society as a whole. Capitalism works.
