Due to the overwhelming response to my last post regarding impressions of a Shiraz i tried (

) I thought it'd worthwhile to share the latest. To recap i know NOTHING about wine but am enjoying it as a semi-nightly ritual (a glass or two). The food pairing part of it is very fun (like trying different spices) and adds just a little something extra to dinner. I have always looked at wine drinkers as a group of whackos that lie to each other about how much they enjoyed their grape juice and thought it'd be interesting to see if there is really anything to be enjoyed (beyond getting loaded which i do not care to do) from wine. Doing the same thing with beer as well.
Had an '04 Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet last night with NY strip steak and baked potatoes.
It was yummy. (note this is my version of 'hints of currants, spice and a general oakiness,' etc. ).
It did get a touch warm in the glass and was somewhat overpowered by the steak once it did. A fresh glass from the bottle (several degrees cooler) did the trick and it was an enjoyable meal. It really is interesting how much temp. affects flavor.
Paid something less than $15 for the bottle and will be getting more.
