well that is good you got it off. Trust me on this one- If you unscrew the ball socket at the pedal end and pull it through you will be fine. There is a black plastic adjustment that slides over the tube- this slides off with little persuasion, and pull the whole cable through. Attach it back to the motor while it is out, it is going to be a GIANT pain in the rear (I especially hate routing it back in for some reason...)if you have to feel your way around on re-entry. You will not have a problem running the cable through the tube, I promise. If you do it that way you have 5 minutes worth of reconnecting the pedal and replacing the floorboard/carpet. This is the way I did it on all the cars I did at Porsche (911 turbo, 993 turbo, 993 N/A), I wouldnt steer you wrong.
