Surge brakes vs. electric brakes
Surge brakes are not legal in many states for trailers with dual axles and weights of more then 3000 pounds. While few states will enforce such regulations, if you are stopped and don't have electric brakes and the associated break-away set-up, you are done. Go with electric brakes. The cab controllers are 1 hour installs, and the brakes are nice for even in city driving. Also consider a load-equalizing hitch. If you are observant, you will see them on almost all truck - dual axle trailers. With electric trailer brakes and load-equalizing hitches, these 50 foot or longer rigs are quite tame. My wife drives my F-150 with a 20 foot trailer just like my Volvo.
