Just a brief US history lesson. The times most people alive point to when you ask them about the "Good old days" is the 50's. That's also the time when the Unions had the largest number of members. Like anything, the good times have to end. Unions contributed more to the greatness of this country than they have to the decline. They just happen to be a convenient whipping boy for the large corporations and their supporters.
I've always said, when a worker can walk in the owners office, sit down and discuss a problem, there is no need for a union. But when the owner(s) have someone representing their case, why shouldn't the workers?
How many millionaires got that way with the sweat of their labor alone?
