Video Cams and SloMo playback.

I do some sports technique analysis on video. I prefer quicktime because it has the sliding bar, you can move it back and forth to study movements. Windows Media player is the worst, as you can only stop it and restart.

Lately, people have emailed me some Video clips from their Video Camera that I can't open in Quicktime player. Today I even got an MPG from a Sony Camera that quicktime wouldn't open, but Windows Media does.

I am assuming it's a proprietary thing, agreements between Sony and Microsoft that keep them exclusive in playback.

What I'm looking for is Camera brands which aren't tied together with Microsoft and record into AVI's or Quicktime playable formats. Or do I need to find a converter that will take the files and convert them to something that would.

Thanks for the input here.....
