I've been considering an LS1 engine swap for the last year so thats what I would do.

I doubt thats what you have in mind though. Vorshlag used to have the engine they took out to do the LS1 swap for sale, and they can probably point you to a few locals that have engines for sale. Depending on the damage to yours it may be cost effective to get a used engine.
