I opted not to get 4WD on my Silverado. The hit was more like 2-3 mpg due to the lower gearing in the 4WD rear differential.
Besides, I'd only use it once or twice a year when we get 4+ inches of snow.
4WD for rain is completely unnecessary IMO.
