Several items on the CIS system are easier to do with the engine out. If the vaccum hoses have not been replaced in a while, I'd definitely do that. You might want to pull the CSV (cold start valve) and clean it or outsource the cleaning to Witchhunters. You could also replace the seals for the intake runners. That's all the cheap CIS stuff I can think of.

I have a 76 also and it smokes pretty bad. I'm going after the oil return tubes this weekend. But might have to do what you're doing if I can't figure it out.
