Because my wife is Indian, we tend to be a bit more adventurous than most in India. I would recommend doing a well planned tour of the area around Delhi and down to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. Then perhaps go to Bombay (make sure to take a trip out to the elephanta caves. Really cool.). Really depends on your interest and your budget. For the most part, India is not the kind of place you want to 'go native' and stay in cheap hotels or travel with the locals. Stay in nice places. We are going to use the train system a bit more this time, so I will let you know how that works out.
I can tell you in a very general way that Northern India is rougher than the south. The people tend to be less friendly, the polution is worse, just rougher all around. But a lot of the best historical sites are in the north.
