Tim,

The squirrel sees you and runs to the back side of the branch, thinking its safe. You aim for the point where the squirrel is on this side of the branch and fire. The concussion kills the critter and usually very little damage to the meat so more to eat.

Its the way the old timers did it and works very well if you are a good shot. I grew up in the hills and was pretty good, or so the US Army thought. Once I got on the range doing my quals they asked "you got anymore friends like this at home who shoot like this?"
