As Stomachmonkey said, why the tearoff with one layer? I would only reccomend a tearoff iff the existing shingles were trashed or sheathing had to be replaced.

A couple of questions.
1. Can 2x4 rafters support (steep pitch) a second layer of architectural shingle?
2. Would a second layer of architectural shingles over an existing layer have a roof with a shadow from the bottom layer?
