It would depends on the rafter span and spacing. What kind of a roof is it that has 2x4 rafters?? Or is it a truss roof?
Im not a big fan of two layers of architectural shingles, although Ive seen it done. Way too thick in my opinion. Plus you have to use like 4 inch nails.
