Prom was a spending contest at my highschool. It was all about who could show up in the most ridiculous limo/most exotic sports car/most expensive dress/most expensive tux/most expensive jewelry/etc... Kids routinely spent tens of thousands of dollars. This was 10+ years ago in Naperville. I can't imagine it has gotten any better.
I boycotted every school dance in high school--and I have not a tinge of regret about it either. We would get all of our friends together and hang out on Prom night rather than going to the dance.
