As I understand it, you are LEGALLY entitled to the OEM installation media when you purchase a computer. At very least, you should have received 'recovery' CD/DVD's to get the system back to the state as it left the factory.
On that note, XP will be very happy with 3GB of memory. If you are afraid of 'losing' Vista, simply purchase a new hard drive, perhaps a 7200 RPM drive, remove the original one, install XP on the new one.
