If you're North - go in past Mt. Palomar on 76 to 78. If you're in the city, I-8 to 79 (trees, Mt. Laguna on your right - sweepers with a feel like Germany), 79 to 78 (down great curves to the desert floor - not as good as the Palms to Pines Hwy. to Palm Desert but less traffic - or at least there was 15 years ago!) After the Salton Sea you're on your own - but it looks like you can get up to I-10 or down to I-8 easily. We always turned around after a drink of water in Borrego Springs (water was free in the desert back then) and tore back upto Solana Beach where I lived.)
