Pulling the valve cover will tell you right away if they are broken. I remember pulling the valve cover on my sc and just seeing broken studs and barrel nuts fall out
As far as the 1987 goes the 2.7 and 3.0 SC motors were more likely to pull/break head studs due to the materials used for the blocks, heads, and studs (dilivar).
