I looked over my old sets of wires, and they are the same as 928Intl currently sells, screw at the plugs, crimp at the distributor. Greg was in the middle of building a motor, which limits conversation, but the impression I get is that the distributor end used to be screw on as well and was preferred to the current crimp.
You can see in this pict, there isn't room for more than a crimp at the distributor end.
