It looks period correct. They had a bunch of M1s at the Lime Rock Park Vintage Festival a few years ago, and many had designer paint jobs commissioned by BMW when they were new. Some were pretty wild.
I would keep them if they have provenance or factory status, but I think the car would stand well without them.
