the amount of fumes created on medium to large planes when fueled which takes quite some time is not something to be careless with.
the biggest problem my dad and others had during wwII on biak/new guinea was explaining to local natives how cigarettes and aviation fuel fumes GO KA-******* BOOM! dad lost many many friends refueling aircraft and on the PT boat piers where they refueled.
