Nearly all of my racing was on a Honda CR250 of various years (the last being a '90 or '91). I bought my current bike (CR125) for my wife, but she thought it wa too big, so I ended up on it as a play bike to ride with the kids. Suprisingly, I was able to pull the holeshot a few years ago at a 30 plus MX race against brand new tricked out 450 4-strokes even with my old back tire that had no sharp edges anymore
. While I think I am a bit faster on a 250, it is not by as much as I would have thought on a big track. The main difference to me is when there are big doubles right out of a turn where the extra bit of power can decide whether one clears the jump or cases it.
All that said, I am thinking of picking up a used '03-'06 CR250 this summer to go play in the 40+ class and maybe the intermediate class also (I used to race AMA 250B class).
I do notice that on the 125, even being out of practice, I have it pinned WFO nearly always and find myself SEVERELY abusing the clutch.
