Sorry but its no myth. I know of two occasions where it happened. Saw it with my own eyes at MAR, mid-American Raceway in Wentzville Missouri, at an SCCA race.

I know of several cases where rental cars were grabbed to replace ones that had been in an accident or were rented before the race to "graze on for parts" if or when needed.
