It was 17 years ago the last time I read this book (12 years old). I don't think I really grasped the themes and the below-the-surface events back then.
But one thing really bothers me. There is one paragraph in the book that mentions Paul Atreides "other" sister:

For some reason, he recalled his younger sister, her elfin face so clear in his mind. But she was dead now--in a pleasure house for Harkonen troops. She had loved pansies..or was it daisies? He couldn't remember. It bothered him that he couldn't remember.

Now, this is very early on in the novel (page 37), before the Atreides move to Arrakis and before Alia is born--or even conceived. I've been trying to figure out if this a prescient vision of a future that never occurs, or it is a reference to another sister. If the case is the latter, that sister is never mentioned again in any of the six original books.
