I've got a Type-S. It is a nice car. We bought it new back in '02. Solidly built. The '02s have 2nd gear issues, the '03s have 3rd gear issues. I drive mine to the train and to the gym and that's about it--I average 22-23 mpg on Premium. Not so good. On the highway, I've seen over 30 mpg, though. If you rev it, it hustles pretty well, but just around town, there is no place to do so. The car is totally devoid of low-rpm torque. As a highway cruiser, it is a bit noisy and stiff-legged, but mine has the A-spec shocks and springs. If you are concerned about mpg and still want a fun car for the twistys, you could go for a base model, five speed, and get some of the aftermarket suspension goodies.
It seats two comfortably, five in a pinch, and still will swallow tons of cargo (I love hatchbacks). The interior quality is very nice, and it has plenty of nice features.
Overall, it is like most Hondas (and my wife and I have had quite a few between us, see my sig). It does everything well, but nothing spectacularly.
