STOLEN military equipment including parts from F-14 fighter jets is being traded through popular websites like eBay and Craigslist.

Undercover investigators from the US Government Accountability Office used auction website eBay and social network Craigslist to purchase a dozen defence items, including fighter jet parts and biological equipment.

In a report released by the GAO today, investigators said there were "no questions asked" during the transactions.

Most of the stolen items were on the US Munitions List, which restricts their sales outside the US. ......................

In 2006, the US Army launched a new inventory program to improve property accountability, Ms Finnicum said. It has since accounted for over 20,000 items worth more than $US135 million ($145.59 million).

The chairman of the subcommittee, Democratic Representative John Tierney, said he was startled by the fact "that it took the Army and DoD six years to get the system in place that probably should have been in place by 2001".
