I know for a fact that if you have a valid pilot's license and medical (but lapsed), you are legal for Sport Pilot. You cannot get approval for SP if you have been denied a medical in the past. I know this because my father recently went through this mental masturbation about whether to let his medical lapse or reapply. He has been dealing with glaucoma for years and just now saw some degredation in his field of vision. He did not want to take a chance with the FAA until he knew exactly what his chances were (long story that I won't bore you all with).

Bottom line is that he let it lapse, flew under SP for a while, then reapplied and got his medical back. Hope this helps.
