Thanks for the input, guys.

I had just replaced the bearings that day, so I know that wasn't the problem. I also checked the ball joints, etc. and all seem solid. I am now inclined to believe the strut is the problem. We were looking at it very carefully (with the car still in the air), and it appears that the movement is at the top of the strut cartridge. I cranked on the retaining cap and it seems to have reduced the movement some - enough so that I think I need to replace the strut as soon as possible.
