there are also solid state devices that will do this - even some with USB storage - you'd need a USB capable "radio" tho - that means one that is pretty new
a smart kid at a Radio Shack may be able to help
But... backing up:
I think she should NOT record the lectures. If they are too fast, then she should get together with the other students and compare notes. As a former prof. of physiology - that is about the last class that an audio recording can help with. I say this recognizing the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Dread) of your 1st year med. student. Tell her not to worry too much -- if she can just deal with the psychological problems, she should be fine. They are unlikely to have admitted her, if the thought she had a poor chance of making it.
Now being an MD these days with HMOs running everything... that may turn out to be the real problem.
