-For a weekend "fun" toy or something like that that you won't drive very much, it probably isn't such a bad idea. But as a daily driver there are some HUGE negatives about those old Transporters that you probably haven't considered.
1. Not especially easy on gas, compared with modern minivans.
2. VERY scary in strong crosswinds.
3. They have no "smog" equipment, and as such pollute.
4. SLOW.
5. Very unsafe in a frontal collision. No airbag, a metal pole aimed at your chest, and your feet? They are at the scene of the accident at the same time as the front bumper! Broken ankles in even a minor shunt.
Cool ride, just make sure you know what you are getting into-
